Biological Dentistry

This approach improves your well-being by addressing dental care with the health of your whole body in mind.

We all know that your mouth is a part of your body, but many of us don’t realize just how much they are related. The truth is, the materials used in dental care and how we treat dental conditions have an incredible impact on our overall health. Sometimes this connection isn’t apparent. Chronic inflammation or irritation may present as something completely unrelated to a dental cause, but health care providers should never ignore the oral-systemic connection between your mouth and your body’s overall health.

At Spring Oaks Dental, we prioritize this connection, focusing on how the well-being of each system in your body (and your mouth in particular) interact to improve your health across the board. From ensuring the biocompatibility of our materials to encouraging myofunctional therapy, we use our expertise and knowledge to make certain that every single patient of ours leaves our office feeling better than they entered.

Your fillings were designed to help you, but they may be doing the opposite.

Using the SMART technique, we can remove and replace your amalgam fillings, leaving you with a healthier smile.

Getting a filling to treat your cavity is one of the most common dental treatments. Each year millions of people choose between natural-looking white and traditional amalgam (silver) fillings without fully understanding the impact of the materials their dentists use. Many who receive silver fillings believe they are made of 100% silver, but that is rarely the case. In fact, silver fillings are composed of 50% elemental mercury with small amounts of other metals. For some with metal allergies and sensitivities, this can result in chronic inflammation.

Fortunately, there is a process to remove and replace this material. Using SMART, the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique, the team at Spring Oaks Dental can ensure that your fillings are free from any materials that may be harming your health.

Safety is always our top priority. That’s why we include the following precautions to protect all our patients:

  • We conduct this treatment in a room with a high-quality air filter.
  • The office is equipped with an amalgam separator to capture the waste mercury so that it is not released into the public water system.
  • The treatment team wears protective gowns and face coverings.
  • Before and after the SMART procedure, the treatment team has the patient rinse their mouth with an adsorbent material. Our office uses activated charcoal.
  • Barrier precautions are taken to protect the patient’s skin and clothing.
  • The patient will have external air or oxygen delivered to protect against mercury vapor.
  • The dental team follows all local, state, and federal regulations when disposing of mercury contamination.

The muscles in your face impact your mouth’s function.

With myofunctional therapy, you can improve your oral and overall health.

Myofunctional therapy is a low-cost, noninvasive treatment that can improve how you talk, eat, breathe, and even sleep. With this treatment, experts will guide you through a series of exercises focusing on the muscles around the face, mouth, and tongue. These exercises help restore optimal movement of these muscles and have been shown to improve a variety of conditions from sleep apnea to speech disorders and more.

Sometimes dental treatments can leave you with mouth sensitivity.

Ozone gas therapy may help.

Ozone gas, which consists of antimicrobial properties, can treat a variety of dental conditions as a disinfectant. This can reduce infections and minimize the sensitivity you may feel after certain dental procedures. At Spring Oaks Dental, we use ozone gas as part of periodontal therapy to help restore health to areas of chronic gum infection. We also use ozone gas therapy underneath crowns and fillings to reduce sensitivity.

We accomplish this by using Prolozone, which consists of two injections. The first is a mixture of procaine, homeopathic remedies, and vitamin B12. The B12 and homeopathic materials prepare the cells for accepting the ozone, while the procaine acts as a numbing agent. Following this is a second injection into the tissue consisting of the ozone gas. With Prolozone, our team can help patients retain their natural teeth by reducing inflammation and promoting healing.

Have you ever wondered about the ingredients and materials being used on your body?

Our team prioritizes biocompatibility for our patients.

We care deeply about the overall health of our patients. That’s why we carefully evaluate each and every instrument, dental material, and medication in light of each patient’s unique biological needs. Working with a practitioner specializing in meridian testing and biocompatibility, we maintain a complete list of all of the materials we use in the office. We then compare this list to a patient’s test results to check for compatibility before each dental treatment. We also utilize acupressure points to assess the body’s natural flow of information to give our team a bigger picture of your overall health so we can address any issues from a functional and comprehensive level.

Your body has an amazing capacity to heal.

Using platelet-rich fibrin, we can jump-start this process naturally.

At Spring Oaks Dental, we appreciate the human body’s unique ability to heal and promote growth. Our blood, in particular, contains amazing elements that keep us strong and healthy. Thanks to modern technology, we can utilize these healing properties in a concentrated form by conducting biological extraction with platelet-rich fibrin (or PRF). We first draw blood, then put it through an in-house centrifuge that separates the blood into its core components. One of these components, the fibrin, consists of beneficial growth factors, collagen, and more. Once the centrifuge separates the blood, we can safely and effectively put the fibrin content into the extraction site after removing a tooth. Injecting this area with extra fibrin can expedite healing and promote growth.
